Choosing the correct paper weight (measured in GSM) is crucial for the functionality, aesthetics, and cost of your packaging. Here’s a detailed guide for common applications:

Gift Bags & Shopping Bags: These undergo significant handling and folding. Using paper that is too thick (e.g., over 300gsm) can cause stress points at the folds, leading to cracking. We generally recommend 250gsm or less for flexibility and durability.

Retail Cartons (e.g., for cosmetics, small electronics): These boxes provide structure and branding but don’t bear extreme weight. A sturdier feel is desired. We suggest 250gsm or more for a premium, protective feel.

Rigid Luxury Gift Boxes: These achieve their thickness and rigidity by mounting (裱贴) a printed sheet onto thick cardboard (greyboard). For this process, a thinner, more pliable paper is essential. Papers like 157gsm or 128gsm are ideal for lamination onto board, creating a flawless, luxurious surface.

Shipping Cartons & Corrugated Boxes: These require strength for protection. The printed outer liner is laminated to the corrugated medium. If the outer paper is too thin (too low GSM), it cannot resist the moisture and tension during adhesion, leading to a visible “wavy” or uneven surface. Using 250gsm or more for the outer liner ensures a smooth, professional appearance that withstands shipping. Understanding these principles helps in selecting the right base material for a successful final product.
